Becca’s Closet offers free prom dresses

By Nancy Stephens

Main Street Fairview

Becca’s Closet at First Baptist Church Fairview is once again offering a large assortment of special-occasion dresses free of charge to high school girls having difficulty purchasing their prom night attire.
“We have lots of formal dresses for your high school event this season,” shared Jamie Gillette, who has been helping with the Fairview Chapter of Becca’s Closet, open since 2009.
Along with dresses, Becca’s Closet ALSO offers a smaller selection of accessories such as shoes, purses and jewelry to complete a girl’s perfect prom night fashion look. They also offer the dresses to girls for other high school formal events.

“Becca’s Closet is such a wonderful organization. We have already given away over 60 dresses this season, but it is so special to see the smile of each young woman when she picks out her dress,” said Wendy Wallace, who is overseeing the Fairview Chapter this year.
With the help of donations and volunteers, the church ministry has been able to provide prom dresses to thousands of girls from all across the state and region for the last 14 years.

Wallace noted, “Anyone can make an appointment to receive a dress!”

From a large assortment of dresses to shoes and mathcing accessories, Becca’s Closet has the perfect prom night attire – and it’s free for those on a tight budget.

Becca’s Closet is only open during scheduled appointment times. You can schedule an appointment by emailing gownsforgirls@comcast.net. Please include your name, high school name and town, cell phone number, approximate dress size and the date of your formal. We will reply to you with appointment availability and directions. If you cannot make an appointment on a Saturday, they will do their best to accommodate your availability.

WHERE IT BEGAN
Sixteen-year old Becca Kirtman was a cheerleader, honor student and caring young woman who lived in Davie, Florida. As a freshman in high school, she launched a dress drive to provide prom dresses and accessories for any high school girls who could not afford to purchase them.
She singlehandedly collected and donated over 250 formal dresses and helped hundreds of girls across South Florida attend their High School proms in style.
After Becca was killed in a tragic automobile accident on August 20, 2003, her family and friends decided to create Becca’s Closet to carry on her good work. Since then, many chapters across several states have been created to assist thousands of girls with their prom needs.

DONATE
Becca’s Closet also offers an opportunity for the community to donate items. They will accept long formal dresses, shoes, jewelry and hair accessories year round. While they welcome all donations, their current greatest need is for larger size dresses size 12 and up, shoes, jewelry and accessories. If you know anyone who may have a formal dress in their closet, you are encouraged to share Becca’s Closet contact information with them. All donations are tax deductible.
