Cheryl Lewis: Local TV just got more local on Main Street Media channel

I don’t own a telephone, anymore… not the kind that plugs into a wall, anyway. I’m not sure many of us do. The extra expense just doesn’t make sense, since anyone who wants to reach me has the number to the cellphone in my pocket that also gives me weather, directions, a camera and 119,647 photos.

I also don’t have a television … not in the conventional sense. I stopped paying for cable about eight years ago and haven’t looked back; all we have now is a flat monitor with WiFi. I still get to watch The Voice live each Monday, just like everyone else, and can see pretty much anything I wanna see via streaming.

Do you know what “streaming” means?

I’m not actually sure I do. What I do know is that when I’m ready to see something, all I have to do is tee it up on my phone, laptop, iPad or monitor and BOOM! There it is.

Immediate gratification.

I’ve been checking out the programming of Main Street Media of Tennessee which produces the paper you’re holding, and it’s not just physical newspapers, anymore. Don’t get me wrong; I’ve been a columnist forever and I LOVE real, honest-to-goodness newsPAPERs.

Crinkling them, page by page, reading over the top of my coffee and breakfast is something I savor.

There are also several free TV shows, some EVERYDAY, produced here by Main Street Media TN, that feature truly local interviews and stuff to do! It’s ideal for me, since we moved here a year ago and are still figuring out the best places to eat and sights to see, but it’s mighty interesting to folks who grew up here, too.

Stefanie Miller, who’s a sassy and fun newscaster, presents a morning show called Mornings on Main Street each weekday at 8 a.m. for half an hour. It gives you a heads up about what you can find in your local papers and fills you in on exciting events scheduled practically in our backyard. Each time I watch, I make a list of things I don’t want to miss and then my husband and I make our plans for the weekend.

It’s a great way to begin the day!

On Mondays, Devon O’Day is next at 10 a.m. with her cooking show, Devon’s Table. Y’all know Devon. She was just awarded Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame status. That’s a huge deal and only comes after a lifetime of excellent broadcasting, songwriting and public service. What an accomplishment!

Each weekday, she also produces Main Street Today live at 11 a.m. When I watch her show, I feel like I’m chatting with the girl next door; she is a friend to all of us.

Yes, there are shows dedicated to local sports.

Each Monday-Friday, Main Street Sports Today airs with Chris Yow and Mo Patton giving a roundup from 2-3:30 p.m. On Tuesdays, there’s also Main Street Preps This Week with Tyler Palmeteer and Russell Vannozzi and Sumner County Sports with Blaine Kellar. Wednesdays include Mornings on Main Street Middle Tennessee with Chris Yow, Casey’s Take with Casey Patrick and Main Street Preps North with Brady McAtamney.

Each month, Devon co-hosts Taste of Nashville with John Dwyer, interviewing musicians and local guests onsite at the Omni Hotel in downtown Nashville, and At the Zoo with Jim Bartoo.

Pretty soon, we’ll be launching a new show and I’m so excited. Appropriately named, “I’m Not Dead, Yet,” it will feature me stepping in front of the cameras, tackling a day in the shoes of local workers and highlighting some pretty cool adventures that invite us to see Tennessee. I’m no spring chicken, but there’s still a lot of life left in these bones!

Don’t miss the debut on Monday, July 3 at noon, with a Fourth of July tribute to our local firefighters, a fireworks vendor, butcher and even a cooking segment grilling out! We’re all local!

OK, so the big question: How do you tune into these shows?

This might seem unfamiliar to some of you, so bear with me. It’s truly easy. I’m just going to nudge you one baby step toward embracing technology since it offers so much!

These days, you can add the free Main Street Media TV app to your cell phone and if you have Internet service you can watch everything from there. You can also go to our papers’ website, Facebook pages, Twitter and YouTube. If you have Apple TV, Roku, Google Play or Amazon Fire, you can even watch us there. All of these options are listed on our website.

That’s a lot of access created so you can also watch what’s truly local!

Can’t figure it out?

Just call us! Phone cord is optional.
