Tennessee catfish kill remains a mystery

Larry Woody's Notebook

Biologists are investigating a Chickamauga Lake fish kill similar to this one. Larry Woody

Biologists have yet to determine what recently killed hundreds of catfish on Chickamauga Lake.

No other species were affected, and the dead fish were found in a relatively small area of the lake. That would suggest some sort of localized contamination, although it is puzzling why other species besides catfish were not killed.

Catfish normally are a hardy species that can survive conditions in which other fish can’t.

Youth fishing team wins: The Mt. Juliet Fishing Team sent five teams to the recent junior state championships at Watts Bar Lake, and one comprised of Elijah Booker and Baylor Cooksey won Top Team honors and finished second in the Top Program standings.

Other competing members were Grayson Sanford, Hunter Brakefield, Landon White, Jamison Watson, Aaron Price, Will Goodall and Hudson Graves.

Conservation raffle: Tickets are on sale for the annual Conservation raffle conducted by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Federation.

Prizes include a new truck, travel trailer, various hunting packages for elk, deer and turkeys, fishing packages and assorted outdoor gear.

Tickets cost $10 for one, $20 for three and $100 for 10. Last year’s raffle generated over $1.8 million for various conservation causes in partnership with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The ticket deadline is Aug. 20.

For additional information and to purchase tickets visit the TWRF’s Conservation Raffle website: twrf.net.

Free Fishing Day: The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has designated June 10 “Free Fishing Day,” and signals the start of “Free Fishing Week.”

No license is required to fish in public waters during that period. However, permits may be required in some Wildlife Management Areas. Visit the TWRA website, tnwildlife.org, for specifics.

License reminder: Fishermen who failed to renew their license at the end of February, as had been the procedure in the past, are reminded that licenses now expire on the date they were issued last year.

Details about license requirements and options are available in the Tennessee Fishing Guide and on the TWRA website, tnwildlife.org.
