Matthew Petterson’s four straight goals help Brentwood lacrosse snap Ravenwood’s title streak

NOLENSVILLE — Brentwood offensive coordinator Conner Reed approached head coach Andrew Herbert six weeks ago with a message about freshman Matthew Petterson.

“He said, “Matthew is going to be the reason we win a championship,'” Herbert said.

There could not have been a more precise prediction.

Petterson’s four straight goals in the second half ignited Brentwood’s 7-3 victory over Ravenwood in the Tennessee Scholastic Lacrosse Association state championship, securing the Bruins’ first title since 2008.

“After the first half, I felt like I was letting them down,” Petterson said. “After I scored my first goal I never stopped.”

Petterson has been on a recent tear. He scored six goals in Brentwood’s semifinal victory against Franklin last week.

Brentwood (15-1) trailed 3-1 at halftime of the finals but shut out its crosstown rival 6-0 in the second half, snapping Ravenwood’s streak of three straight titles.

It looked like history would repeat itself when the Raptors took a 3-1 lead behind goals from Gavin Hussey, Sam Bratten and Nick Bertauski.

But Brentwood’s Mason Baker and Macklin Thomas scored quickly to start the half, then Petterson took over. He scored three goals in a two-minute span and added his last with 54 seconds remaining.

There was even an assist thrown in from his brother, junior Brocks Petterson.

“I could imagine him doing that because I’ve seen it,” Petterson said. “He’s a tremendous athlete. We’ve obviously played a lot in our backyard and he’s developed into a great player.”
