MURFREESBORO – While softball, along with track & field, drew the biggest crowds and commanded most of the media coverage during last week’s Spring Fling 30, several other local student-athletes vied for state championships clear across town at the Adams Tennis Complex.

Teams and individuals from Watertown, Green Hill and Wilson Central competed in their respective TSSAA Class 1A and Class 2A tournaments.

The Watertown girls team dropped a 4-0 decision to eventual state champion Summertown in their quarterfinals match last Tuesday.

Watertown’s No. 1 player Summer Sesnan lost 6-2, 6-0 to Summertown’s Gracie Kelly; No. 3 Katelyn Rodriguez fell 6-1, 6-2 to Emma Perry; No. 4 Sarah Pemberton lost 6-1, 6-3 to Annalee Kelly and No. 5 Savannah Rosbury was defeated 6-2, 6-1 by Hope Jones.

Miranda Nix, Watertown’s No. 2, had beat Libby Konig 7-5 in the first game, but was trailing 3-0 in the second when the other four matches were completed.

Summertown went on to defeat Union City 4-0 in Wednesday’s state finals, marking the fourth state championship since 2019.

The Lady Tigers reached the state tournament with a 4-2 victory over Signal Mountain in a May 18 Sectional match after having won both the region and district championships.

Summer Sesnan

Sesnan, who won the region singles title, was the only senior on the WHS squad. She also competed in the Class 1A singles competition and lost to Kingston’s Jasmine Muecke 7-5, 6-7 and 6-3 in the quarterfinal round.

Class 1A girls doubles –
Watertown’s Nancy Caroline Thomas and Miranda Nix opened with a quarterfinal victory over Sophia Ramirez and Mackenzie Jenkins of White House 6-4, 6-0.

Advancing to the semifinals, Thomas / Nix lost to eventual state champions Gracie Kelly and Annalee Kelly of Summertown by scores of 6-2, 6-3.

Class 1A boys doubles –
