The Lady Raiders made every possession count in a 45-41 win over Loretto Thursday night, taking down the No. 4 team in Class 2A at Dwight Clark Gymnasium.

RHS (19-5), which is currently ranked No. 4 in Class 1A, led nearly start to finish. The Lady Raiders knocked down four 3-pointers in the opening quarter and pulled ahead 16-8 early in the second, the largest lead either team held all night.

For Loretto (21-3), the two Weathers were up to the task of hanging with the Lady Raiders, each scoring 12 points. Ally and Sophie answered each RHS bucket with clutch shots in the post and drives to the basket.
But the difference came not from the field, but from the line.

When Loretto’s defense held Richland to just three made baskets in the second half, the Lady Raiders made up the difference at the line. RHS shot an immaculate 17-of-18 from the free throw line. Danica Bridgers hit a key 3-pointer in the third period, and the team hit 15 of its free throws in the second half.

“I felt like we played really well early in the game and might have caught Loretto a little off guard,” RHS head coach Chad Hall said. “The ball went in for us early, and we set the defensive tone that we wanted.

The second half was a grind especially with Katelyn Bass in foul trouble, but we kept our turnovers low and found a way to win. I’m extremely proud that we gutted it out, but at the same time realize that the game matters absolutely zero in context of what we want to still try and accomplish this season. We haven’t reached our ceiling yet.”

Shelby Higgins scored a game-high 19 points followed by 16 points from Bailey Blair. Bass added five, all from the line. Bridgers scored three, and A.C. Hewitt chipped in two.
