The Raiders held tough late but fell to non-district foe Loretto at home Tuesday, 56-48.

RHS (15-8) was up against one of the best Class 2A teams in the area in the Mustangs (17-6) which tied for their district title with Mt. Pleasant.

For a second-straight game, Andrew Huff was among Richland’s best offensive performers finishing with a team-high 18 points. Huff scored 11 of his team’s 23 points in the first half as Richland trailed by two at the break.

But while the Raiders outplayed the Mustangs for much of the first half, several defensive miscues loomed large. An inbound into the backcourt was stolen and converted for a 3-pointer, while two inbound plays by Loretto resulted in wide open shots for five more points.

Richland and Loretto continued to duel through the second half as Richland pulled within one at 32-31 midway through the third quarter. The Mustangs went on to close the third on an 8-0 run, and the road team held serve in the final quarter despite a spirited effort by the Raiders.

“We competed,” RHS head coach Jason Loveless said. “Effort was there, and it should be. This time of year, bad effort changes your season for the worse or ends it. Our effort was solid, but we didn’t play clean. Too many turnovers and too many lapses on defense. Five or six lapses we had, and they made us pay. You can’t do that against a team as good and well coached as Loretto. But we chose a game like this at the end of season to help prepare us for tournaments. The guys are playing well and we have guys in that lockeroom that are buying in.”

Clint Seymore scored a game-high 20 points for Loretto including five 3-pointers. Kasen Buie added 11 points, and Jaxon Roberson finished with 10.

For Richland, Huff’s 18 led the way, while Carter Edwards scored 11 points. Jameson Andrews contributed 10. Luke Jones scored five, and Gage Kirk scored two in a game in which he missed much of the second half due to foul trouble. Cooper Jackson also scored two points off the bench.
