The Brentwood Bruins hosted the Franklin Admirals in a 6A match up on Friday night.

Brentwood, coming off of a big win against Dickson County in week six, had won three of their last four games.

Franklin earned their third win of the season against Centennial the week before, and were looking to stay on the right track against the Bruins.

For most of the first half, Franklin did a good job of limiting big plays downfield and even scored on their opening drive in the first quarter, but the Brentwood rushing attack would prove to be too much.

Luke Walters was the star of the show for the Bruins. He tallied three touchdowns on the night and was consistently the motor that drove the Bruins defense down the field. Walters rushed for 123 yards and three scores on 13 touches.

“(Walter’s) a stud man. He had a great night,” Brentwood head coach Ron Crawford said, “He’s been asked to do a little bit more, and he’s done more.”

The Bruins rushing attack was also aided by a few big plays from senior QB Cade Granzow. Granzow broke a few big runs and also found the endzone on a rushing attempt just before halftime, giving the Bruins a 21-7 lead.

The quarterback scored three total touchdowns, two through the air and one on the ground, and gained a total of 283 yards from scrimmage.

After the break, the Bruins received the kickoff, with hopes of building upon their lead and putting more pressure on the Admirals, but Franklin’s defense stepped up big.

Senior defensive back Taylor Spierto intercepted a Granzow pass attempt on Brentwood’s first possession after halftime and returned it for a touchdown. The pick-six brought the score to just an eight-point deficit.

Spierto, a pass-catching playmaker on offense, also caught two receiving touchdowns on the night.

But the Franklin offense struggled to get much going. Admirals QB Connor Beavon threw two interceptions on the night, and the Admirals were unable to claw their way back into the game. Beavon recorded a passing touchdown, but the turnovers were ultimately too difficult to overcome.

The Bruins played a strong game in the second half by forcing turnovers and capitalizing on those turnovers on offense. Crawford felt this was an important piece to the Bruins’ 42-20 victory.

“We got them behind. It’s a little easier to play coverage and it’s a little bit easier to get after the passer when you’re playing with a lead,” said Crawford.

Brentwood’s next game will be at home against Independence High School on Friday, Oct. 23. The Franklin Admirals will look to get back in the win column following a bye week when they face Dickson County on the road.
